Social Networking

What are some of the findings in the Pew Report that intrigued you?

I found the 55% of teens with online social networks to be lower than I originally expected. I only know one person without a social network in college, and when I was in high school everyone I knew had one. However, I guess teenager includes younger teens like 13-14 where it is less common to have a social network. Although, I would argue that it is more common now to have one then when I was a kid.

What are some of the behaviors displayed by the teens in the videos that intrigued you?

What is up with poor boxxy? It's like she downed a bucket full of sugar before she sat down to do her video.

I remember having a "Gaia" when I was a kid, but I don't remember falling in love with anyone in "two days" and then making a youtube video. I remember being told to only talk to people that I know from school because anyone else is probably some crazy old dude. Appearently she wasn't given the same talk. I am happy that I didn't know about youtube when I was "boxxy" and "sex man's" age, just because I don't think they have a very strong understanding of the possible negative ramifications of posting things like that to the internet. Kids are really smart in some ways, but they're really stupid in others, I am glad I had less public spheres to make a fool of myself when I was a kid.

What were your results from the quiz? Were you surprised? Why or why not?

I am, according to the quiz a "Digital Collaborator" but personally I think this is not accurate. I don't use technology anywhere near that well. I don't even have a smart phone. I love the internet and I am on it way to frequently, but that is only because of how useful it is for the college lifestyle. When I go home, I can go a week without getting on the internet at all. I would call myself more of an Ambivalent Networker--I like the internet, it has its uses, but sometimes I like to step back from it and get away from all the noise.

"If you are a Digital Collaborator, you use information technology to work with and share your creations with others. You are enthusiastic about how ICTs help you connect with others and confident in your ability to manage digital devices and information. For you, the digital commons can be a camp, a lab, or a theater group – places to gather with others to develop something new."
